TYEE REP PROGRAM U11-U18

CRMHA Representative (Rep) Tyee Hockey Program Information Information *Tier 2

Program Overview

The Representative (Rep) Program U13 to U18 is designed for players who possess both the desire and the ability to compete at a high level. It is intended for those committed to developing their skills through regular on- and off-ice training. Participation in the Rep Program requires dedication, a positive attitude, and a willingness to invest time and energy into personal and team development. As a Tier 2 association within BC Hockey, CRMHA fields competitive teams that face strong opposition across Vancouver Island while supporting players through balanced development and opportunity.

The U11 Development Tyees is CRMHA first step into competitive hockey . This means, there will be a higher level of commitment to practice, games and travel, but with a focus on player development. These teams have been created to provide a necessary base for our Representative program and to provide an opportunity for the more skilled U11 players to play a more competitive level of hockey.  The U11 Tyees will each participate in the VIAHA Island League and will attend 2-3 out of town tournaments. U11 Development Tyees will have typically 2 practices and 1 game (3-4 hours) of on-ice time a week - with the emphasis on player skill development and age-appropriate tactics.   The U11 Development teams (although not Representative team) will adhere to Representative Team policies set in place by CRMHA.

Unlike Recreational hockey, Rep is more competitive, time-intensive, and travel-heavy. It’s geared toward athletes looking to challenge themselves and grow.

Financial Commitment

Rep hockey does come with additional costs, including:

  • Travel expenses for games and tournaments
  • Non-parent coach payments (when applicable)
  • Team apparel and dress clothes to meet CRMHA standards
  • Additional association rep fees and possibly additional team fees

 📋 Rep Program Snapshot:

  • Tryout Fee: $150 for U11 Dev and $175 for U13-U18 (non-refundable)
  • Rep Fees: $300 - $450 (in addition to registration)
  • Season Length: September - March
  • Practice: 3 hours/week + games
  • Travel: Island-wide + tournaments
  • Teamwear: Required (CRMHA standards)
  • Fundraising: Allowed (must follow CRMHA policies)

Rep teams will be allowed to fundraise due to their higher costs and must observe CRMHA policies with respect to sponsorship, fundraising and financial practices. It is the expectation of all teams and specifically all team staff, that every effort shall be made to act in a fiscally responsible manner. Unnecessary expenses will be avoided. The team budget will be approved and monitored by the CRMHA Executive. The team treasurer is responsible for budgeting and communication with parents.

Rep hockey is a significant commitment. The program includes three hours of on-ice practice per week, with a focus on age-appropriate skill development and tactical training. It may also include extra time commitments weekly such as video review sessions and team dryland training sessions.

We recommend families carefully consider the time and financial commitments before entering the Rep tryout process.

 Program Objectives

The goals of the CRMHA Rep Program are to:

  • Foster Excellence: Encourage each player to achieve their personal best based on their interest, ability, and potential.
  • Promote Enjoyment: Create a fulfilling and enjoyable environment that balances challenge and fun.
  • Enable Advancement: Provide opportunities for players to progress to higher levels of competitive hockey.
  • Support Development: Encourage both individual growth and a broader understanding of the game.

The Rep Program emphasizes the refinement of fundamental hockey skills, as well as tactical, mental, and team-based preparation. Rep hockey brings together players with advanced skill, strong work ethic, and a team-first attitude. Guided by experienced coaches and supported by dedicated training, our Rep teams compete against top players from across Vancouver Island and beyond. This structure gives players the opportunity to:

  • Compete against opponents of similar skill levels
  • Strengthen both individual abilities and team dynamics
  • Build character and sportsmanship

League Play and Tiering

Our U13, U15, and U18 Rep teams known as the Tyees, compete in the Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association (VIAHA) League. CRMHA is classified as a Tier 2 association. “Tier 1" typically includes the highest-level teams in larger associations, or the Tier 1 North Island Bears Team.  CRMHA’s Tier 2 status reflects our association size and regional classification—not the effort or quality of our teams.

However teams are seeded in the fall to create balanced divisions for league play. For example:

  • Division 1 may include Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams (and occasionally a Tier 3 team).

Island League Playoffs are tier-specific:

  • Tier 1 teams play against other Tier 1 teams, and so on.
  • The winner in each tier advances to the BC Provincial Championships.

Tryouts

All players registered in U11, U13, U15, or U18 who wish to try out for a Tyee team must:

  • Be in good standing with CRMHA
  • Pay a non-refundable tryout fee at the time of registration

Tryouts typically occur in early September.

We recognize that tryouts can be a stressful time for players, parents, and volunteers. We encourage open communication with your child throughout the tryout process. While not all players will make a Rep team, every participant benefits from the evaluation experience and receives feedback to support growth.

Our coaches, managers, and evaluators are volunteers. Please be respectful and recognize the countless hours they dedicate to making Rep hockey possible. We ask for your patience, respect, and understanding throughout this process.

Evaluation Process

The Tyee Rep Committee is committed to a clear, structured, and equitable evaluation process designed to identify players best suited for participation at the rep level. The evaluation process will be based on measurable skills assessments, scrimmage performance, and, where appropriate, coach input and observation of attitude, effort, and team dynamics.

Pre-Evaluation Communication

  • Information on evaluation dates, location, drills, scrimmage formats, and evaluation criteria will be provided to all players and families in advance.
  • Players will be informed of the expectations and objectives of the evaluation sessions.

On-Ice Skill Assessments

  • Players will be evaluated through a series of standardized drills designed to assess skating, puck handling, passing, shooting, and positional play.
  • Evaluators will use a consistent scoring system to rate each player's technical skills.

 Scrimmage/Game Play Evaluations

  • Players will participate in scrimmage sessions where evaluators will assess hockey sense, positional play, competitiveness, teamwork, decision-making, and in-game performance.
  • Effort, attitude, and sportsmanship will also be considered during scrimmages.

Use of Neutral Evaluators

  • Wherever possible, independent or neutral evaluators will be used to ensure fairness and reduce potential biases.

Coach Input and Observations

  • Head coaches may provide input based on their observations of a player's leadership, attitude, work ethic, and ability to integrate into a team structure.
  • Coach input will be considered as one component of the overall evaluation, but will not override the skill-based evaluation results.

Player Placement and Team Selection

  • Final team selections will be made based on cumulative evaluation results and coach input.
  • Every effort will be made to form balanced and competitive teams, while ensuring fairness
  • Players and families will be notified of the results within a reasonable timeframe after the final evaluation session.

Feedback to Players

  • Players will be offered feedback on their performance to support their ongoing development should it be requested.
  • Constructive feedback may be provided verbally or in writing, depending on the resources available.

Every player, whether placed on a Rep or Recreational team, plays an important role in our association and will receive quality development

Code of Conduct and Expectations

CRMHA has high expectations for all participants in our Rep Program. Players, coaches, team officials, and parents are expected to demonstrate:

  • Respect toward referees, opponents, and all participants
  • Good sportsmanship on and off the ice
  • A team-first attitude and commitment to excellence

These standards apply within CRMHA and in all interactions with other associations.

Pride in the Program

Tyee Hockey is about more than competition—it's about character, culture, and community. Many of our current coaches are former Tyee players who have returned to give back to the next generation. The program promotes a strong foundation built on teamwork, respect, and pride in wearing the Tyee jersey.
